Should Moldovan winemakers seek other markets?...

It is well known that Russia and the former republics are Moldova's main target when it comes to wine exports. According to the latest data provided by Moldova-Vin, wine exports over January-November 2008 have increased by 51% compared with the corresponding period last year. Exports to the CIS states totaled US$152 million, up 56%. Russia imported Moldovan wine products worth US$56 million, Ukraine and Belarus – US$41 million and, respectively, US$40.6 million.
Let's not forget though that Moldova's dependency on this market has its own disadvantes; in 2007 our economy suffered enourmously due to Russia's banning of both Moldovan and Georgian wines. My questions to you is: should Moldova keep exporting its wines to Russia and CSI or start looking for other markets as well? Do we have an alternative? According to Moldova-Vin we .... Read the following report Moldovan Wine Exports and answer the questions below:
- Where did Moldova export alcoholic products worth US$2.947,4 millionin the first half of 2008?
- What does Agroindustrial Agency “Moldova-Vin” say about the first-half wine exports to Romania compared with the corresponding period last year?

  1. -RM exported alcoholic products worth US$ 2.947,4 million the first half of 2008 in Romania...24.4% of RM's jan-jun 2008 exports to EU.
    -According to the “Moldova-Vin”, the first-half wine exports to Romania have increased by 54% compared with 2007.
    -The 1st wine import partner is Russia (about 31 million $),the 2nd is Ukraine (about 25million$) and the 3rd is Belarus (about 21.6 million $)
    -Speaking about EU Poland is the 1st (around 5million $)and Roumania is the 2nd (around 3 million $).
    -Wine exports to the Czech Republic increased by 71% to US$ 1.4 million, (11.7% of the wine exports to the EU ). :)
    -RM's exports to the EU represents 12.4% of the total Moldovian wine exports. :(
    These data show us that Moldova is too dependent on Russian wine market...we have to direct our market to EU but we also have to produce high-quality wine...to decrease wine- export tax...to create brands...to use new technology...
    being an agricultural country . wine industry is a strategic one... people should invest money in producing and processing wine..our agricultural land is not asserted at maximum..is not used efficiently...we have alternatives...but to enter EU market we have to make a lot of improvements...

  2. I think that Moldova is a lazy agricultural country with many opportunities and labour force.We have many lands full of grass, which could be used for plantations. Outside is the 21st century but our country is still going strong on the old system and old techniques. I think that we should make a change and to export our wines not just in Russia,because we felt once what means to be dependent of somebody's decisions.
    We should develop,invest this agricultural branch, use new technologies if we want to enter the EU market place and to have a big demand and a huge supply.

  3. It was really interesting for me to find out a more detailed information about Moldavian wine exports and namely such facts as:
    1.Moldova in the first half of this year exported alcoholic products worth US$2.947,4 million to Romania;
    2.Agroindustrial Agency “Moldova-Vin” states that the first-half wine exports to Romania have increased by 54% compared with the corresponding period last year;
    3.Moldova’s second largest import partner is Ukraine (US$25.322,1 million) the first one being Russia (US$30.610,8 million),if to refer to European import partner the second is Romania, after Poland(which exports over January-June 2008 totalled US$4.716,7 million (39% of the wine exports to the EU), up 72%);
    4. Wine exports to the Czech Republic rose by 71% to US$1.410,5 million, making up 11.7% of the wine exports to the EU member states.
    5.Wine exports to the EU added up to US$12.62 million which is 12.4% of the total Moldovan wine exports.
    It is well known , and the information presented in these 3 articles demonstrates us the fact that Moldova's basic wine markets are Russian and that of CIS states.The dependence on them was felt very strong in 2006, when Russia started the so called wine war ,stopping the import of Moldavian wines.
    I think that Moldova should keep exporting its wines to Russia and CIS but at the same time it should pay a bigger attention on European market which surprisingly seems to have fallen in love with Moldavian wines. As a good example can serve us France, which according to Agroindustrial Agency “Moldova-Vin” has increased its imports by unbelievable 68 times according to the same period last year.
    As a conclusion i can say that our priority should be the quality and only after this the sales.

  4. Moldova is a prevelegiate contry for vinlanders, if we talk about the soil, umidity, temperature...and offcourse we have posibility to produse best wine in the World BUT...
    From history we know that a lot of countries has a lot of interes to our lands, and tried to get them, today also there area lot of investors that have a lot of business inters here, ofcourse in wine to...WHY? Because our political system, law system and coruption permite them to abuse from our wealthness...That is a big problem because our wine industry is not so developed in terms of extern business What we need to be first?
    A good law thst will protect our treasury from external intereses, a good investor it will be better if will be GOV. , or maybe GOV. with some other Moldovan investor, research the main problems where they shoud inves: packaging, botteling, new high tech. ,image, new ideas, fair price and with some medals on inernational exhibitions and have garanteed a good place in the international MARKET

  5. According to the report of Moldova Wine Exports it is presented the following information:
    -in the first half of this year exported alcoholic products worth US$2.947,4 million to Romania.
    -According to the Agroindustrial Agency “Moldova-Vin”, the first-half wine exports to Romania have increased by 54% compared with the corresponding period last year.
    -Romania is Moldova’s second largest European import partner, after Poland. Wine exports to Poland over January-June 2008 totaled US$4.716,7 million (39% of the wine exports to the EU), up 72%.
    -Wine exports to the Czech Republic rose by 71% to US$1.410,5 million, making up 11.7% of the wine exports to the EU member states.
    -Wine exports to the EU added up to US$12.62 million. This is 12.4% of the total Moldovan wine exports.
    -The CIS countries imported Moldovan wine products worth US$83.842,2 million, Russia – US$30.610,8 million, Ukraine – US$25.322,1 million, Belarus – US$21.671,3 million.
    In my opinion all these indexes show that Moldova is a weak country that is fully depending on others.I think that our country's wine exports and market segmet should change and try to reach new and more developed markets,to become independent of Former Soviet Union by focusing on the so-called ,,Globalised world''.We have a lot of alternatives, for ex. USA, China and EU ,which will probably be a great opportunity for our wine brand names to become well-known on the global markets and will be constantly appreciated at their fair value.

  7. Moldova exports very good and high-quality wine in other countries, but the truth is that the biggest part is exported in Russia. Without the russian market there is likely no future for our wine indystry, we depend too much on Russia. I think that Moldova needs to start exporting wine in other european and asian countries and try to not depend on Russia anymore. I think that winiers from our country should start working with winemakers from other big countries.
    Our country is agricultural and winemaking is moldova's number one industry and we have to pay more atention for producing better wine.

  8. According to "Moldova Wine Exports"
    1.In the first half of this year exported alcoholic products worth US$2.947,4 million to Romania.

    5.Wine exports to the EU added up to US$12.62 million. This is 12.4% of the total Moldovan wine exports.
    According to those facts I can affirm that Moldovan Wine export and market is very limited and it mainly depends on Russia and CSI countries which mean we must accept that we can’t really develop a good profitable export because we don’t dispose with high quality technologies, agricultural investments and strong business relations with our partners.
    In my opinion we should improve the quality of our products, invest in our agricultural sphere, and try to certify that our wines are one of the best wines in EU by this attracting new business partners which will lead to an alternative.
    I truly believe that one day our export will reach to a well positioned international level and that people from abroad will be proud of Moldova’s export progress.
