Moldova - # 90 out of 120 Best Countries for Business according to Forbes

According to an article published by Forbes in June 2008, Moldova remains one of the poorest countries in Europe despite recent progress from its small economic base. It enjoys a favorable climate and good farmland but has no major mineral deposits. As a result, the economy depends heavily on agriculture, featuring fruits, vegetables, wine, and tobacco. Moldova's dependence on Russian energy was underscored at the end of 2005, when a Russian-owned electrical station in Moldova's separatist Transnistria region cut off power to Moldova and Russia's Gazprom cut off natural gas in disputes over pricing. Russia's decision to ban Moldovan wine and agricultural products, coupled with its decision to double the price Moldova paid for Russian natural gas, slowed GDP growth in 2006. However, in 2007 growth returned to the 6% level Moldova had achieved in 2000-05, boosted by Russia's partial removal of the bans, solid fixed capital investment, and strong domestic demand driven by remittances from abroad.
Read more on Forbes' official website and come up with your own prediction - how about 2009? Is Moldova ging to climb or go down Forbes' list?

  1. Moldova was and will be a poor country. There were too much time given to Moldova to grow, and many generation saw that nothing has changed, we are still de poorest country. And on the Forbes'list we will stay there on the 90 level. Alina Godoroja FB27A

  2. If to compare this rating to the previous year, we can observe that Moldova has lost some points, going from the 87th to the 90th place. So, you are asking for some predictions... Even if Moldova does an extra effort and somehow improves its situation its rating will never go up to an acceptable place.
It is all about our legislation that doesn't support as it is needed the local entrepreneurs. Obstacles appear at every single action that you try to undertake: when searching for a bank loan, when registrating your company, when paying the taxes.
Besides this, Moldova is facing a high level of curruption and lack of economical freedom.

Frankly speaking it is not surprising for me that Moldova is on the 90 place, but however, it is a little bit disappointing.
Moldova has a big potential, which unfortunately isn't appreciated.

We will be able to talk about some changes only when our economical "software" will be ressetled, because this program is being troubled with the huge amount of viruses (corruption, bureaucracy and lack of transparency)

  3. As a freshman, I can vision it through different angles:
First, to attract investor's attention, we, Moldova, should manifest ourselves in dealing with foreign investments, creating a solid base for them.
Secondly, in order not to violate any political relationships with the neighbouring states, such as Transnistria, Ukraine, Romania.
My prediction may seem simple as I believe that in 2009 Moldova is going neither to climb or go down Forbes list. It will probably take time and poise for a better opportunity.

  4. it is very sad and unpleasant to read this information about Moldova, even it isn't something new for me.In this article is described how poor our country is,how bad are the conditions we are living in and how unstable our political situation is(according to the majority the main cause of those 2 statements mentioned before). I really believe there still exist a chance to us to become respected as we were once,to prospere and to demonstrate our potential. All these depends in major part on us-citizens. I'm sure that step by step it is possible to make some changes, the first one being the election from the 5th of april.

Even the forecasts are pesimistic,i still want to be optimist and affirm that Moldova will climb the Forbe's list in 2009.
